EN

for uncharged ionizing radiation, differential quotient of E tr with respect to m , where E tr is the mean sum of the initial kinetic energies (ISO 80000-4: Mechanics) of all the charged ionizing particles liberated in a mass (ISO 80000-4: Mechanics) m of a material:

K = d E tr d m
FR

pour des rayonnements ionisants non chargés, quotient différentiel de E tr par rapport à m , où E tr est la somme moyenne des énergies cinétiques (ISO 80000-4: Mechanics) initiales de toutes les particules ionisantes chargées libérées dans une masse m (ISO 80000-4: Mechanics) de matière:

See the remarks for absorbed dose.

The name "kerma" is derived from Kinetic Energy Released in MAtter (or MAss or MAterial).

The quantity d E tr includes also the kinetic energy of the charged particles emitted in the decay of excited atoms, molecules, or nuclei.

When the mass element d m consists of air the term air kerma is used. It can be convenient to refer to a value of air kerma in free space or at a point inside a material different from air, e.g. to the air kerma at a point inside a water phantom.

In report 85a of the ICRU a definition with an equivalent meaning is given as:

The kerma, K , for ionizing uncharged particles, is the quotient of d E tr by d m , where d E tr is the mean sum of the initial kinetic energies of all the charged particles liberated in a mass d m of a material by the uncharged particles incident on d m :

K = d E tr d m .
FR
1 unitsml(Gy) = 1 unitsml(J/kg)

K = d E tr d m .
